Intent

It is our aim that the children who enter our Early Years develop physically, verbally, cognitively and emotionally whilst embedding a positive attitude to school and learning.  Within our setting we aim to provide a stimulating environment that provides a fun, safe and creative area rich in wonder and memorable experiences, which is suitable for each child’s unique needs and stages of development. We provide opportunities for children to be independent within their learning and development journey.

Whilst we understand that children learn in different ways, play is an integral part of learning and this is at the heart of our Early Years curriculum. We love to be outside and we spend time being curious and caring about the world around us. Our curriculum promotes children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life. We work in partnership with parents and carers to provide and encourage our children to become confident and independent learners.  We are building strong foundations which will encourage a love of learning! By the end of EYFS, children will develop a sense of belonging and independence and that they are emotionally prepared for their learning in KS1, giving them firm foundations for their further education and the society they live in.

Our children learn through play, in the following seven areas of learning:

  1. Personal and social development
  2. Physical development
  3. Communication and language
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the world
  7. Expressive arts and design

Implementation

Come rain or shine we love to be outside! We enjoy exploring the world around us, looking for mini-beasts, caring for birds and planting vegetables! We give the children opportunities to build on their gross motor development enabling them to build their core body strength. We do this through, sweeping up, using large rollers and paintbrushes and by building obstacle courses.

We feel that being independent is a really important aspect of the children’s development. We teach the children how to take their shoes on and put their wellies on, help them to put their coats on independently. We also have a lovely snack and chat area whereby we allow children to pour their own drinks, select their own snack and use cutlery appropriately! This is one of our favourite areas and we love how the children build on their social skills helping each other!

Reading is at the heart of everything we do in the EYFS. Our curriculum is based on high quality books that create awe and wonder about the world we live in. Our children love to share stories in our beautiful reading spaces and have access to books in and around our learning environments.
