School Council

At Chaucer Infant and Nursery School, we believe that everyone’s voice is important, and our Smart School Council ensures that we are listening and responding to the voice of pupils.

Smart School Councils key ethos is that every child has a voice and any idea is worth sharing.

School council meetings are held in every classroom which means every child’s voice is heard.

Even if children aren’t on the Communication Team, they still have the opportunity to make a difference by joining an Action Team enabling them to lead change.

Action teams explore the feasibility of introducing change, giving ownership of projects to the children.

What is our Smart School Council for?

Our Smart School Council is helping our young people to:

  • Learn to work together
  • Learn about democracy and pupil voice
  • Learn how to play a positive role in our communit

It is for everyone in our school, helping pupils to:

  • Find things they want to change
  • Come up with ways to make them better
  • Put those ideas into action
  • See what works (evaluating)

We involve every voice by ...

  • Every class has a meeting every 1-2 weeks
  • Questions topics are decided by a team of young people called the Communication Team with the help of the lead teacher
  • A council member runs the meeting each time (with help from the teacher if they need it).
  • Another council takes notes each time (with help from the teacher if they need it)

Our Staff commit to ...

  • Make sure meetings happen when they are supposed to.
  • Support pupils to run meetings.
  • The Headteacher will answer all the school council’s questions within one week.
  • If the Headteacher has to say ‘no’ to anything, she will explain why.
